  • Girls Camp 2021

Girls camp 2021 was a success. Our theme this year was Line upon line small and simple things lead to a great work. We had 140 young women and about 50 adult women leaders and wonderful priesthood leaders who all did their part in making this years girls camp a successful one. We met together for opening and closing each day where we would sing, pray and either raise or lower the flag. There were activities provided as options for the wards to bring their young women to during the day. There were some spiritual rotations that all of the young women got to participate in. The wards got the majority of the day to spend with their young women how they felt necessary, to bond, build testimonies, sing, serve,do physical activities, play games or make crafts. It was fun to go around to different camp sites and see the different things taking place. One ward made homemade jelly, another made their own miniature golf course (we tried and were not par for the course). Other wards were found singing and others painting, another making bracelets, and another dancing. One ward was even celebrating Christmas in July. No matter what Ward we visited we felt the spirit of camp within their camp. We were there for only 2 1/2 days and yet I feel like we all came back a little better and a little closer to the Lord than before we left. Our stake camp director this year was Malia McOmie, a young woman from the Mesquite 2nd ward. She did an amazing job! From Stake YW President Kris Bingham

For all my companions, for all the lessons they've taught me. I'm grateful for the spirit, and that Ive been able to learn how he speaks to me while being here. I'm grateful the home that the WYM has been for me, for taking me in when I didn't know what my future would be. I'm grateful for my grandpa Price who I hope is with me today, and every day as I become more like Christ! I'm grateful for eloquence and poetry, and for words that sound pretty enough to touch our heart when we speak. I know that this gospel is true, more than I ever have before. I know that the restoration did happen, and that Joseph Smith did see God the Father and Jesus Christ that day. I am grateful for the restoration and how it has changed my life. I know that the plan of Salvation is true, and I am so grateful for the knowledge of it that guides me towards the light! I've learned a lot about heroes recently, what they are made of, what they do and say. But I've realized since being a missionary that you are my hero. Heroes aren't just heroic in word or creed, but in heart. And I hope that I've come to develop a heroic heart since serving the Lord. I am grateful for my Savior, and for his sacrifice. I know that he lives, and that he loves me! I know this is the Lords Kingdom in these Latter Days. I say these things in the name of Jesus Christ, amen.

  • Samuel Spencer Martinez Obituary

Samuel Spencer Martinez, 44, unexpectedly passed away, peacefully, surrounded by loved ones on Tuesday, June 1, 2021 in Las Vegas, Nevada. Sam entered the world earlier than planned on July 18, 1976 in Salt Lake City, Utah. He was lovingly raised, along with his four older siblings (Benny, John, Shonna, and Dan), by their wonderful parents Benjamin and Meredith Austin Martinez. Sam grew up in Bountiful, Utah on an idyllic street lined with beautiful trees. Many happy days were spent playing games and creating mischief with the neighborhood kids. One of his favorite things to do was sneak apricots from the trees overhanging the backyard fence and quickly escaping before being caught. In the summer months, he would fill the middle of apricots with ice cream for a refreshing treat. His steadfast parents created a home filled with love, laughter, and happiness. He loved reminiscing about road trips they took while he was in his youth, particularly an epic trip to Texas. His young years were spent in Mexico, where his parents served as mission president and companion. He would often be found playing ping-pong with the office elders, a skill that would only increase as he aged and make it hard to beat him in a game. Sam was a busy child, one time painting an entire mission home room, their dog, and himself white! He recollected that the removal of the paint was not an experience that he would want to endure again. Throughout all his life he enjoyed any type of athletics, but particularly soccer and golf. He earned the nickname of "Grasshopper" for the way he played soccer on the field. In later years, he loved coaching his children's soccer teams, with one of his daughter's teammates once exclaiming, "The only game we ever won was the one he coached!" He also loved the season he coached the boy’s soccer team at Virgin Valley High School. One of the treasured experiences of his life was serving in the San Juan Puerto Rico mission from 1996-1998. He particularly loved the perspective and knowledge he gained from President Jesus Nieves. Sam loved recounting mission stories around the dinner table. He was a master story-teller and was able to bring humor into any conversation. Sam was a very gentle soul, kind to the core, and always willing to help those in need. He radiated peace and calm, having the ability to put others at ease, simply because they were in his presence. He married Annjeanette Guerra on August 5, 1999 in the Portland Oregon Temple. Their life was filled with love, laughter, and one of Sam's favorite things: hypothetical situations, which would usually cause Annjeanette to chuckle and lovingly roll her eyes. They loved watching movies together but the best part of that was quoting movie lines together and no one else would know what they were talking about. They supported and strengthened each other through many of life’s pursuits, a life filled with all the happiness and sorrow that mortality has to offer. Six beautiful children joined them over the years. They were Sam's joy. His children adored him and would always light up when he was with them. He will be deeply missed by Christian Spencer, Shayla Rachelle, Olivia Grace, Emma Kathryn, Scott Austin, and Julia Meredith. They loved his stories, humor, goofy faces and sounds, and taking Sunday evening walks as a family. They inherited his love of fish, homemade gravy, ice cream, and all the tart fruits. We will never be able to eat Skittles or Starburst candies without remembering him. We will also smile when thinking about his strong dislike of peanut butter, pickles, and early mornings. Sam loved the practice of law. Schooling took them to Valparaiso, Indiana for three years where some dear and lasting friendships were made. After graduation, Sam worked tirelessly for the cause of justice as a Chief Deputy District Attorney in Las Vegas, Nevada. He had the ability to connect with victims in a way no one else could. He devoted his professional life to using the law to help those people find some measure of peace after heartbreaking circumstances. He was greatly loved by all who had the pleasure of working with him. His presence will be tremendously missed at the office. Sam is survived by his forever wife, Annjeanette, and their six wonderful children: Christian (20), Shayla (17), Olivia (15), Emma (12), Scott (10), and Julia (7); his father, Benjamin (Salt Lake City, UT); siblings and their spouses: Benny and Dana (Chelsea, AL), John and Laurie (Rigby, ID), Shonna and Mike Linford (Salt Lake City, UT), Dan and Ileana (Sandy, UT); nieces, nephews, in-laws, and many extended family members. He was preceded in death by his beloved mother, Meredith, and his grandparents. We know that their reunion was a joyous one and we are so thankful for the plan of salvation. Funeral services will be Saturday, June 5, 2021 at 11 am at the Mesquite Stake Center of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints 100 N. Arrowhead Mesquite, NV. A viewing where friends may call will be Friday, June 4 from 6-8 pm at the Stake Center. Friends may also call Saturday morning from 9:30-10:30 am. Interment will be at the Heber City cemetery in Heber City, Utah under the direction of Virgin Valley Mortuary. Words can not adequately express the gratitude we have to those medical professionals who lovingly cared for Sam. We also wish to express our thanks to all those who have given service to us at this time. There are too many to personally name but we love you all! "We'll share a pew, me and you. "Sounds divine and holy. "Too-de-loo ... "Same to you." • Face to Face Stake Conference- this weekend

Dear Brothers and Sisters, Life is starting to return to pre-pandemic life. The Clark County Commission has decided that the local COVID-19 mitigation plan will expire June 1, allowing for the return of pre-pandemic guidelines that lift restrictions involving capacity limits, large gatherings and more. Increasing vaccination rates, a low positivity rate and normal hospitalization rates all justify the lifting of restrictions. Our stake conference this weekend will return to pre-pandemic guidelines. What that means for us: We don’t have to worry about social distancing. Masks are optional and acceptable. Common sense is still a good guideline. If you’re not feeling well, we ask you to join us virtually. We will continue to broadcast virtually all sessions of conference. Sunday worship services will continue to be broadcast as it has been. We will also broadcast second hour classes based on need. The leadership session will be held Saturday, 5 June 2021 at 4:00 PM. We ask that all those who attend ward council meeting attend this meeting. We also ask that any who attend a ward huddle for missionary or temple and family history work attend. This includes those representatives from the priest quorum and the oldest age class for the young women. During the leadership meeting we will discuss what Sunday meeting schedules will look like going forward for the near future. The adult session will be held from 6:00 to 7:30 PM on Saturday. The general session of our stake conference will be held Sunday, 6 June at 10 AM until noon. Below is the link for the broadcast. http://mywebcast.churchofjesuschrist.org/Events/mesquitenevadastake We are so looking forward to being together again. We ask that you pray for peace, joy and happiness—as well for those that will be speaking and singing and for each and every member of the Mesquite Nevada stake to be able to enjoy conference and fellowship one with another again. All our love, Mesquite Nevada Stake Presidency

  • Camp Zion Information

Youth (turning 16 in 2021 - 18) and leaders are invited to attend Camp Zion—the Mesquite Nevada Stake Young Men & Young Women Conference—June 9-12, 2021 at Camp Kolob. Our theme is Hope of Israel. Camp Zion is a chance for young women and young men to develop greater spiritual power and prepare for adulthood in a beautiful mountain setting. Our goal is to help each youth in attendance to better understand and prepare for the sacred temple covenants they have the privilege to make. Please note these important dates: · Sunday, May 30: Parent letter and 2 Permission and Medical Release Forms due to ward YW President/Bishop. · Wednesday, June 9: Youth and leaders arrive at the Stake Center at 7:00 am with sack lunch. · Saturday, June 12: Youth will eat breakfast and then travel back home. · Sunday, June 27: Camp Zion Devotional. Youth of all ages, leaders, and the parents of youth who attended Camp Zion are invited to attend. Stake Center at 6:00 pm. Sunday Dress. PARENTS please have your letters to your youth and 2 completed Permission and Medical Release Forms (found at Permission and Medical Release Form) turned in to your Young Women President or Bishop no later than May 30th. Each parent is invited to write a letter to their child. This could include your feelings about their divine nature, your gratitude and appreciation for them, your testimony, your feelings about sacred covenants, and/or your love for them and hope for their future. Place the letter in a sealed envelope labeled with your child’s name. This is usually a “surprise” and therefore we recommend not discussing it with your child prior to camp. It is our hope that as many as are eligible will attend. Because Camp Zion is only held every other year, some youth will only have one opportunity to go. Please encourage the young women and young men of your ward to make this event a priority. Sincerely, Stake YM Presidency: Shane Hughes, Benjamin Leavitt, Jed Vellinga, and Seth Saterfield. Stake YW Presidency: Kristine Bingham, Paige Anderson, Jennifer Woods, and Tiffany Porter.
