Elder Chance Thornton Back to Missionary Letters We had a BAPTISM!!! Hey everyone! The past couple weeks have been awesome. We baptised our friend Amani and I got to confirm her! This last Saturday we got to go to the Manhattan temple with Amani and the ward I'm currently serving in. It was an amazing experience. Most likely will be the only time I will get to go to the Manhattan temple during my mission, since they are closing it sometime in the beginning of 2024. Unless I can get another person baptized before then lol. The Manhattan temple is super interesting, I guess it has a gym inside it like other chapel buildings do, and also serves as a stake center. I thought that was really cool. I went on an exchange with a Spanish speaking elder (Elder Logan) to his area a few weeks ago and that was interesting since I can only speak a little bit of Spanish. He would ask people if they wanted to come to church with us and have a whole conversation with them, just from that one question. I thought that was awesome. The people that we would meet would ask if I speak Spanish and I would say "poquito" haha. I spent a whole day with Elder Logan observing, but I could still feel the spirit when we (meaning Elder Logan) would talk to people. We met a guy on the street named Guiermo, and he talked a lot with Elder Logan. I understood a couple of words, and he said he was a singer/artist, which is really cool. I was just happy to see that just by Elder Logan asking him "Hey, do you want to come to church with us," that we got him to talk with us for 30 mins. He would smile and laugh and it made me so happy to see that, even though I couldn't understand anything. It was a neat reminder of why I chose to serve a mission, which is to bring joy into other people's lives. Which reminds me, it's Christmas time! I invite everyone to look for opportunities to serve others or even just smile at someone. You never know how much they could have needed that smile. With that being said, yesterday I was reading in Mosiah chapter 2 and king Benjamin said "...when ye are in the service of your fellow beings ye are only in the service of your God." He goes on saying that we are indebted to God, forever and ever. We should serve God with all our might, mind and strength. A couple ways that we show thanks is by keeping His commandments and serving others. I would like to end by encouraging you to read Mosiah 2, to find out what you understand of it for yourself. Think about how you can go about this Christmas season and spread His light! I love you all and please don't judge my grammar. English class was not my strong suit haha, plus I didn't proofread this email to see if it makes sense, oops. Also, feel free to email me! Only if you want to though haha. Love you all, Elder Thornton🫡 Pictures: #1- My companion and grinding out calls, #2- George Washington Bridge, just thought it looked cool lol, #3- District P-Day with other missionaries, #4- "#401becauseoftheson", the New Jersey mission baptism goal for 2023. • Elder Hayden Johnson

Elder Hayden Johnson Back to Missionary Letters The Power of the Book of Mormon Gonna be a quicker weekly email due to the District on Rarotonga wanting to bike around the whole island on electric bikes. 😂🏝️ In this email I could share about all the days and events that have taken place, but I will leave most of that for my journal. Today I want to testify of The Book of Mormon and share some awesome experiences that come from the power within these pages. Recently in preparation for the April General Conference I have been studying heaps about the Restoration, Joseph Smith, and The Book of Mormon. The more and more I read everyday from the Book of Mormon, the more I understand its contents and am thankful to have in these Latter Days. I began to study Chapter 5 of Preach My Gospel to find other ways I can share this love of The Book of Mormon with others as I am tracting. The first cool event that happened was during an exchange with one of the Elders in my district. We were in His area and scheduled to visit a man they have been teaching for a long time named Simran. Now Simran comes to church and seems to love the church, but the Elders have always been curious if he actually understands what they are teaching. It makes it hard to teach him due to his wife (who is a returning member) that loves to talk. So during this lesson we felt prompted to read from the Book of Mormon. Moroni chapter 10 to discuss receiving answers to questions. During the lesson we went slow, we asked Simran if he believed in The Book of Mormon... He paused then immediately began flipping through the pages of The Book of Mormon and turned to 2 Nephi 29. Simran began reading these verses '3 And because my words shall hiss forth—many of the Gentiles shall say: A Bible! A Bible! We have got a Bible, and there cannot be any more Bible. 4 But thus saith the Lord God: O fools, they shall have a Bible; and it shall proceed forth from the Jews, mine ancient covenant people. And what thank they the Jews for the Bible which they receive from them? Yea, what do the Gentiles mean? Do they remember the travails, and the labors, and the pains of the Jews, and their diligence unto me, in bringing forth salvation unto the Gentiles? 5 O ye Gentiles, have ye remembered the Jews, mine ancient covenant people? Nay; but ye have cursed them, and have hated them, and have not sought to recover them. But behold, I will return all these things upon your own heads; for I the Lord have not forgotten my people.' He then said that he use to believe in just the Bible like many others, but then through prayer he has come to know that God has spoken to others in the Americas as well, that God has not stopped speaking to His people. That the Book of Mormon is true....... My jaw just about hit the floor. My heart was full of love and awe for this man. The other experience was on another exchange during a couple hours of Door Knocking and contacting people. My companion for the day felt pressed to go knock on a house I have already contacted a couple of times without them being interested, but this time another man came out that I have not met before. He talked about religion and how he was the only one in his family that didn't go to any church and didn't believe in God too much. He discussed about faith and how it had a different meaning to him than to others. Thankfully I was holding the Book of Mormon in my hand so I felt impressed to open to Alma 32:21. I gave him the book and asked him to read it out loud. '21 And now as I said concerning faith—faith is not to have a perfect knowledge of things; therefore if ye have faith ye hope for things which are not seen, which are true.' My companion and I shared testimony of faith. That we were both young and didn't know everything, but we have gained a spiritual witness of the truth of who God is and that our Heavenly Father loves us. That for himself he could also gain faith and gain all the joy and happiness that comes from following God. He told us that he had never read anything like that before and it made sense to him. He wanted us to come back next week to teach him more about Faith and who God is. Well I love this mission and I am still so blessed that the Lord has allowed me to stay here in the Cook Islands another couple transfers! The members and people that live here have such a different lifestyle than back in America, it makes me grateful that the gospel if for all the people around the world. Hope you all have an amazing week! Ka Kite -Orometua Johnson Previous Letter Next Letter

Elder Zachary West Back to Missionary Letters Hey everyone I know it has been a while since I last sent out an email, but I'm going to try and send one out regularly now. So a lot has happened since I last wrote an email, so i will try and not make this one too long. So Elder Rushton and I now have a new companion that we got a few weeks ago. His name is Elder Hatch and he is a cool dude who just got done with the online MTC. We were able to go and do some service this past week which was pretty cool. We have some members who have a big 40 acre property and they have apple trees. We were able to help them cut up some apples and make fresh apple juice out of it. They let us take home a bottle of it to try and it was really good. Another really cool thing that happened this week was getting to go to a wedding on Saturday for 2 of our investigators David and Josie. They are really awesome and the next day on Sunday, they were baptized. It was really cool to be a part of that. Other than that not much that is really exciting has gone down out here. I hope you all have had a good week and hope to hear from you soon! - Elder West Previous Letter Next Letter

  • Elder McClain

Elder McClain Back to Missionary Letters Another Week Gone Hey Fam, This week has been crazy. My Companion, Elder Fuller gets to go to the Ukraine, his original assignment and it's transfers. I'm getting a new companion and I honestly know nothing about him. But I know he plays the Bag pipes. I am going to miss Elder Fuller, he is a beast. I have learned so much from him. I am not getting transferred, but my area is now the whole Pineridge Reservation!!!! (It used to be 2 different areas) I am kinda super stressed about it. It is a lot of area to cover 😳. But I know that through God anything is possible. Please pray that my new companion and I will be guided by the spirit. There is a lot of work here to do, I know God will provide a way. My first area on my mission was in Pine Ridge. I was shocked that I was transferred to the other side of the reservation which is Kyle. Looking back the Lord was preparing me to know both areas on the reservation because I now cover it all. Even when we don't understand, God's hand is in all things. I got one of the coolest compliments this week from Alan Reddy. We were doing service for Alan, so he can add onto his house. We were taking and he said, "You know what I've noticed about you Easton." I said "What" then he said, " You may only be 19, but you have the wisdom of a 30-year-old man." It was really cool, then he said, " you must have been raised by your grandparents." I had to convince him that I was raised by my Parents and that I do have supportive Grandparents. I have met som many wonderful people out here. I love serving them Happy late Father's day to all the Father's out there. I am lucky to have so many Father figures in my life. I started thinking about how my father has affected my life. One of the greatest things about my dad is that he loves everyone and anyone. I think he gave me that attribute. It has helped me so much. I invite you guys to love everyone even those who have wronged you. Matthew 5:44 states But I say to you, love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you. Have a great week! Elder McClain Easton Back to Missionary Letters This isn't the Reservation!?! Hey Fam, This week has been pretty good. I miss my reservation family, but Minot is cool. There's a lot of awesome members here. I am also excited to teach lessons to and provide service for. The people here are super nice. We get fed meals! There is an Airforce base in Minot. I am excited to learn more about it. Being a Zone Leader is pretty amazing There are some awesome missionaries in my zone. I can't wait to get to know them better! This week I was able to use my Melchizedek Priesthood authority 3 times, which was awesome. If you have the Melchizedek Priesthood, I invite you all to use it because it's a rare gift that not a lot of people have. If you are going through some trials or need some comfort, I invite you to ask for a blessing! The Melchizedek Priesthood is the power to act in God's name. I bare testimony that a Priesthood blessing comes from God. I know that it can heal the sick and help anyone! If you want to know more about the Priesthood please ask. • Elder Maurice Perkins

Elder Maurice Perkins Back to Missionary Letters Wednesday we traveled to Nampula. It was interesting. We went to the terminal where the chapas wait to fill up and we found somebody who said that they would take us. Thirty minutes later he pulls up close by our house we get in and we are in a chapa with the cobrador, and driver leaving Nacala. We did not stop at the terminals because apparently the cobrador was in a hurry to get back to Nampula so the first 45 minutes of the trip we are in a chapa and there is one other person that had gotten on. Usually doesn't happen. Afterwards the chapa started picking up people in the districts (the little villages/ towns outside of the big cities on the road to other big cities). The trip ended up taking around 4 hours and went pretty smoothly. We got in Nampula and stayed in the city with Elder Alapati. This week was pretty good On Tuesday we had a normal day visiting families and teaching. We were supposed to travel however the Zone Conference was moved because of some logistical problems that happened. Wednesday we travelled to Nampula. It was interesting. We went to the terminal where the chapas wait to fill up and we found somebody who said that they would take us. Thirty minutes later he pulls up close by our house we get in and we are in a chapa with the cobrador, and driver leaving Nacala. The trip ended up taking around 4 hours and went pretty smoothly. We got in Nampula and stayed in the city with Elder Alapati. On Thursday we had Zone Conference. It was combined with the two zones in Nampula and so everyone was there. I got to see Elder Giauque, Elder Ingman and a few more people. The Zone Conference's theme was about The Book of Mormon: Another Testament of Jesus Christ. The weeks following up to the zone conference we were challenged to read The Book of Mormon prior to the conference. I actually finished the night before the conference. I really enjoyed reading the Book of Mormon and testify of its divinity. I know that it is the word of God. As I read my heart was filled with the Spirit of God. It brought a new spirit to my life and to this work and I saw a significant difference. I testify with all my heart that it was true. Joseph Smith was a prophet of God and it was translated by the power and gift of God. The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints is the true church of Jesus Christ on the earth today. I know these things because I pondered upon them, studied them, and then asked God, with faith in Christ, if those words really are true. By the power of the Holy Ghost, which filled my heart, I know that The Book of Mormon is true. Friday we ended up going back to Nacala, Elder Gava woke up and was a little sick but said he would be able to manage the trip. We got to the terminal at 9 and left around 10. We got to Nacala at 13. It felt like it went by faster, and once again we were able to sit in the front. After getting home Elder Gava wasn't feeling too good so he ended up sleeping. He slept from 13:45 and didn't wake up until 2 in the morning! After using the bathroom he went back to sleep and then woke up at 8 and we ended up going to a clinic. They said he doesn't have malaria but probably he has a bacterial infection. Make sure and keep him in your prayers! Thanks to some of the members we were able to get some food as well. We were able to attend church yesterday, I gave a talk and afterwards we went home. Elder Gava is still a little sick, however he has gotten a lot better. Hopefully he will be 100 percent in a few days so that we will be able to visit a lot of people this week. Anyways, that was my week. Eventful and not so much at the same time, however, I am getting used to it here in Nacala and am excited for next week! Estamos juntos! -Elder Perkins Previous Letter Next Letter

  • Elder Maurice Perkins

Elder Maurice Perkins Back to Missionary Letters Well this week was a little hectic however many miracles happened. As many already know this last Monday I lost my wallet. It fell out of my pocket on my way to buy some things after district counsel on Monday night. I realized when I get home that it was gone and I got really nervous. When you lose things here you usually don't ́t get them back. However, a miracle happened. I prayed and asked my family to pray for me and while we were in the area on Tuesday I got a call saying that somebody turned in my wallet on the other side of the city. It was a miracle and a testimony to me that God does answer prayers. It was also a lesson that I need to be more cautious and aware of things. I am grateful for this learning experience and I am grateful for all those who prayed for a silly wallet however I know that God is aware of us. Even to somebody losing a wallet. Miracles happens. As well there were some even mightier miracles that happened this week. My companion and I have been finding people these past few weeks and this week we were able to find some elect people. One person in particular is a woman who contacted us. She told us that she wants God in her life and to go to church again. We visited her last Sunday and gave her a pamphlet of the Plan of Salvation. She read it all and then on Monday her uncle passed away. We were able to visit her on Tuesday and teach her that lesson. It was amazing. After the opening prayer she stated that she read the pamphlet and loved it. She also told us, "It was also quoting a book that I once had.. I read it and it changed my life but I ended up losing it... it has something to do with a man named Smith or something like that." I then pulled out a Book of Mormon and she responded, "That's it!". Turns out she was taught by a few missionaries before and she said that after reading the Book of Mormon she got a really good job offer in Maputo and ended up moving away. However we were able to visit her and through the direction of the Lord we were able to find her. She now is preparing to be baptized and invited another family to church and they came on Sunday! This week has been amazing and these are just a few of the miracles that happened however I know that God lives. I know that He loves us. I am so very grateful to be a part of this work and know that it is true with all of my heart. I know that the Book of Mormon is true and changes lives. It changed my life and it is the reason I am here in Mozambique today. As well today is Hero ́s Day in Mozambique. I want to give a shout out to my heros; my parents and grandparents, my siblings, and the rest of my family, all of you how support me so much! As well, I thank the Lord my Hero who supports me and guides me in all and is the Good Shepherd of our souls. Thank you! Love you all! Estamos juntos! Até próximo! • Sister Sage Bundy

Sister Sage Bundy Back to Missionary Letters "She is just so adorably clueless" Fun fact about Sister Bundy: the last movie she watched before getting set apart was Clueless (because of course) and this line is kind of the mood for the week. Okay in all honesty, I'm not doing too bad. I've got one week in the field all done! And this week I officially hit my one month mark (weird, right?) And so far the mission has been a party. Well, maybe party isn't the right word because #reverence but it's been overall a solid week. Last Sunday before I left for the field I surprised my family at the Bundy Reunion for testimony meeting!!! Ahhh, it was the best thing ever. I was still sad to miss the dances, races, ice caves, and general festivities BUT testimony meeting was amazing and I got the opportunity to report on my mission as a set apart missionary which was SUCH a cool experience. I feel like there's so much strength to be gained by sharing your testimony with your family and hearing theirs in return. Its seriously so so awesome. It was also good to have one last trip to Mt Trumbull before I left. I love that place with my whole heart. On Tuesday we drove me to my mission which was super cool. Little advantage of driving to your mission is there's no weight limit and no one to check your bags so we packed my carryon full of steaks and hamburger because I may as well not bid farewell to good Bundy beef just yet. My parents also got to meet my mission president and his wife as well as both of my companions so that was also neat. Speaking of which, I met my trainer this week! Her name is Sister Fambrough and she is just the cutest ever. I seriously love her so much. I was lowkey scared that I'd get an awful trainer but lucky me, I totally scored. We get along super well and have tons of fun and laugh a lot. Shes also a hard worker and I feel like we accomplish lots as well. We also live with some Spanish speaking sisters and that's lots of fun as well. Hermana Draut makes me laugh so so hard every single day and Hermana Coray is super sweet, so I definitely am feeling blessed in the roomie department. Last little story in this email but I have to tell you guys about this super cool experience that Sister Fambrough and I had. So we have zoom calls with the whole mission three times a week, so a lot of times we'll go over to the church to watch them. Our mission is kind of bad at time-keeping apparently because they always go over. Anyways. Surprise, we were late getting out but I'm so glad we were! So as we're in the church, we look out the window and see that someone is kinda circling the parking lot. We didn't think too much of it, but when we got out that same car was parked in the shade and they looked like they were having trouble of some kind. We went over and introduced ourselves and asked if we could help with anything. They said they had fuses out and wondered if we had any replacements. We said that we would call the elders and offered to get them some water because it was starting to get hot. We ran to our apartment and called the elders and while we were waiting for a call back we decided to run and quickly grab some lunch. As we passed the church, we noticed that the car was gone. We ran through a drive through and when we got all the way around, GUESS who was standing there? The guy from the parking lot!! We gave him the water and some granola bars and we went around to their car and gave them a Book if Mormon. They also said a prayer with us and have us their contact information. It was awesome. In Gods plan, there are no coincidences. That's about all I got for you guys this week but I love you all and I hope that the rest of your week is great. Previous Letter Next Letter

  • Elder Nathen Abbot

Elder Nathen Abbot Back to Missionary Letters Busy Hey everyone! This week was super busy. So like I mentioned last time, we are covering 3 areas. Mladá Boleslav, Jičin, and Liberec. So this week was just a lot of us trying to meet with people and get in contact with all of the investigators here in the areas. Plus we had to move to MB this week which we did on Wednesday because we had a meeting Tuesday night at 8:30 in Liberec. So we were just like eh, we'll move Wednesday. So we did that. Then we also traveled back up to Liberec 2 other times this week and 2 times to Prague. We have used half of our kilometers this week and it's only the first week. 😅 These next few weeks should be better though. We just had stuff in Liberec planned so we are going to be better at when we plan stuff and when we will be there. It should be good. We had a couple really amazing lessons with people this week. One guy has just had a super hard past and is still struggling with some things. It was amazing to just love him and help him to feel Christ's love for him. And to testify of the atonement of Jesus Christ. He is really looking to change his life and has given us some amazing opportunities already so that he can change his life and align it more with Christ. It is very touching and I really felt love for him as we were talking. I know that God and Christ love all of us. No matter our situation. And that is what we got to testify to him. The other meeting was with a guy who is actually from close to London. I found him on Instagram. He is way cool. He has also been looking to improve his relationship with God. So it's cool. We are gonna meet with him again soon. We were also going to just teach a Restoration lesson but only taught like half of the Resoration then he asked some questions and we ended up talking about the word of wisdom and briefly on the law of chastity. He doesn't speak any Czech, but his fiance is Czech. We are wanting to start teaching her as well. That would be cool to teach the both of them. Other than all of that we had a few more meetings with people and an inspiration night with the MB/Jičin members. They are so cool and love missionaries so much. I'm excited to get to know them. Last week for p-day we hung out a little bit in Prague. Didn't really see anything, but I did get to see my Sisters before they left. Which was such a blessing. I'm glad that I got to see them and talk to them for a little bit. They are super cool. Shout out to Sisters Goodworth and Stilson. This week we had such amazing weather. Like I'm talking shorts and tshirt weather. So me and the boys went and walked around Prague a little bit. Saw a few statues and cool places. Unfortunately I didn't get as many pictures that I would have liked of different things, but that's ok. I was too busy just enjoying. I did get some though. One of the cool things about covid is that Prague is just so empty without all of the tourists. So that's cool. That's all that I have for today. I love you all and hope that you have a great week! Sister Veyo Bundy Back to Missionary Letters The End of the Line Hey hey hey! This weeks is gonna be super short becaauusee YOU ALL MADE IT!!! This is going to be my last weekly EVER!! I head home to Mesquite tomorrow night! I want you all to know that my mission has been the best experience of my entire life. I have seen so much, grown so much, and truly truly come to know my Savior. I wouldn't trade it for the whole wide world. After 18 months I still can't believe how generous God has been to me to allow me to serve Him in this capacity. I cant believe that He has trusted me with his precious children and that He has let me be an instrument in His hands. It has truly given me more joy than I can express. My ONLY regret is that Salt Lake will not let me serve longer. In honor of my last weekly, I wanted to share with you all a few of my favorite scriptures that have described and shaped my mission experience. I'll type some of them out and some of them I'll let you look up yourselves. :) "Yea, I know that I am nothing; as to my strength I am weak; therefore I will not boast of myself, but I will boast of my God, for in his strength I can do all things; yea, behold, many mighty miracles we have wrought in this land, for which we will praise his name forever." -Alma 26:12 (the scripture on my mission plaque :)) "And behold, when I see many of my brethren truly penitent, and coming to the Lord their God, then is my soul filled with joy; then do I remember what the Lord has done for me, yea, even that he hath heard my prayer; yea, then do I remember his merciful arm which he extended towards me." -Alma 29:10 -Alma 7:11-13... FOR SURE my most frequently shared scripture on my mission. Read it over and over and over and over. You won't regret it! -Alma 5:48 "We love him, because he first loved us." -1 John 4:19 -Moroni 10:32 And the whole chapter of 3 Nephi 11 There are so many more but time is currently very very short. I want to testify to you that this church is true! Jesus IS the Christ! Joseph Smith was prophet of the Lord. If you havent found out these things for yourself, please please find out. Pray and ask God. I can promise that a knowledge of these things can change you life. I sure love you all. See you soon. • Hanna Haviland

Hanna Haviland Back to Missionary Letters Kumusta my dear friends, Today has been a very exciting day here at the MTC. All of the missionaries are very excited about the changes in the communication guidelines for missionaries. all in all I don't think that I have seen so many smiling faces on the MTC campus during my time here. Especially in our zone. The three districts that came in the same day that I did are anxiously awaiting our flight plans because, drum roll please, WE ONLY HAVE 10 DAYS LEFT IN THE MTC )insert correctly facing direction ) as well as 10 exclamation points because the key board I am using is kinda special and many of the keys are switched around....in case you were wondering, yes, it does make typing more difficult) I am still loving it here at the MTC and the language is still coming. Tuesday we were blessed to hear from another apostle. Elder Soares came and spoke to us about, you guessed it, obedience. But it was such an amazing talk. I am so grateful for all of the blessings we are promised if we are obedient to the commandments of our God. We actually had kind of a fun experience teaching this week. After teaching a lesson, Sister Stoker and I were having an evaluation with out teacher about how the lesson went. One of the first things that he said was that our Tagalog was magaling, in other words, our Tagalog was great. I kinda just looked at him for a second and then had to double check and make sure that I had heard him right because, well, I am fully aware that my Tagalog is less than ok, and then he and Sister Stoker just started laughing at me. Brother Lieshman, our teacher, then corrected himself and said that maybe it wasn't as great as he had originally thought because he likes to joke around...at least I hope. This week we also did an exercise where we were supposed to teach about what faith is in English and then teach it again in Tagalog. Can I just say that teaching in English was not only weird, but it was hard. I felt like I couldn't get all of the thoughts out that I wanted to say, how backwards is that. But I loved how teaching in Tagalog forced me to teach it more simply. Family and Friends I am so very thankful for the simplicity of the gospel of Jesus Christ and I am so grateful for the Book of Mormon that teaches that doctrine so clearly. EMAIL PAUSE BECAUSE I JUST RECEIVED FLIGHT PLANS. that is all, I got excited. Any ways, after we had the experience teaching about faith we were able to do a gospel study about repentance. I read the scripture 2 Nephi chapter 26 verses 24 and 27. (ten out of ten would recommend reading) so much joy filled my heart in that moment and my desire to the truth of this gospel increased dramatically. My friends, the Savior always has his hands reaching out towards us. He is always inviting us to come unto Him and to find peace and joy through his atoning sacrifice. In other exciting news, this Wednesday we hit our one month mark. Which is so weird because I feel like I have only been here for a couple days. but I am so excited to be heading out so soon. That is all for this week. I hope that this upcoming week you are able to see the hand of the lord in every day. I love you and am so grateful for your support. -Sister Haviland P.S. The email for all of the missionaries has changed this week. even with this change we have been told that our mail should be forwarded to our new email throughout the duration of our mission. My new email is hanna.haviland@ missionary.org Previous Letter Next Letter
